Prescribing
In line with National NHS guidance, Calderdale CCG is asking people with the following conditions to speak to a pharmacist for advice on treatments available to buy over the counter.
The CCG recommends that GPs don’t offer prescriptions for:
- Acute Sore Throat
- Infrequent cold sores of the lip
- Conjunctivitis
- Coughs and colds and nasal congestion
- Cradle Cap
- Haemorrhoids
- Infant Colic
- Mild Cystitis
- Mild skin irritation
- Dandruff
- Diarrhoea (Adults)
- Dry Eyes/Sore tired Eyes
- Earwax
- Excessive sweating
- Head Lice
- Indigestion and Heartburn
- Infrequent Constipation
- Infrequent Migraine
- Insect bites and sting
- Mild Acne
- Mild Dry Skin
- Sunburn due to excessive sun exposure
- Sun Protection
- Mild to Moderate Hay fever/Seasonal Rhinitis
- Minor burns and scalds
- Minor conditions associated with pain, discomfort and/fever. (e.g. aches and sprains, headache, period pain, back pain)
- Mouth ulcers
- Nappy Rash
- Oral Thrush
- Prevention of tooth decay
- Ringworm/Athletes foot
- Teething/Mild toothache
- Threadworms
- Travel Sickness
- Warts and Verrucae
The following items are also typically unavailable on prescription:
- Probiotics
- Baby milks
- Infant colic products
- Vitamin supplements
- Emollients (moisturisers) for minor dry skin conditions
- Cosmetic products, including eflornithine for facial hair
- Antifungal nail paints
- Branded medicines*
- Sunscreen products
GPs will still be able to prescribe these treatments in specific circumstances.
